Combining NDT and DMI: A Comprehensive Approach to Developmental Delay

As developmental delays affect a growing number of children globally, innovative therapies are playing a crucial role in reshaping early intervention outcomes. Leading this transformation is Dr. Purva Pande, a renowned physiotherapist in Gurugram, whose contribution at Milestone Child Development Center offers a unique blend of precision care and clinical excellence. By integrating Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) and Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)—two evidence-backed approaches—Dr. Pande is delivering measurable improvements in strength, coordination, and independence for children with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, hypotonia, and global developmental delay.

According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 1 in 6 children worldwide—or roughly 200 million—live with a developmental disability. In India, a 2021 report by the Indian Pediatrics Journal revealed that nearly 10% of Indian children show signs of developmental delay, but only a small fraction receive timely, specialized care. The numbers are especially concerning in urban centers, where increased awareness still falls short of meeting the complex therapeutic needs of children.

This is where Dr. Pande’s dual-therapy model offers renewed hope. NDT is a hands-on approach that focuses on facilitating normal movement patterns by minimizing abnormal tone and promoting purposeful motor control. It is particularly effective for children with muscle stiffness (hypertonia), floppiness (hypotonia), or delayed gross motor milestones. On the other hand, DMI challenges the neuromuscular system through specific movement sequences, stimulating the brain’s plasticity and encouraging the child to develop new motor strategies.

“Think of NDT as the foundation—it builds core control and movement efficiency,” explains Dr. Pande. “Then comes DMI, which pushes the child to explore boundaries through controlled challenges. Together, they form a roadmap to motor recovery and independence.”

At Milestone Child Development Center, located in Sector 57, Gurugram, this combined approach is showing incredible outcomes. Children who had previously plateaued in progress elsewhere have shown visible gains in just 8–12 weeks. One such case involved a two-year-old girl with cerebral palsy who had not achieved independent sitting. After receiving twice-weekly sessions of NDT and DMI, she began sitting unsupported and initiating crawling movements within three months—a result her parents described as “nothing short of a miracle.”

Research supports this method. A study published in Physical & Occupational Therapy in Pediatrics found that children with cerebral palsy undergoing DMI therapy showed significant improvements in trunk control and balance within 12 weeks. Similarly, NDT has long been recognized by the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) as a gold-standard intervention for improving motor function and reducing contractures in children with neurological impairments.

Dr. Pande, with over 14 years of clinical experience, is one of the few specialists in India certified in both DMI (Level B) and NDT, along with additional certifications in Sensory Integration, TASES, Dynamic Flex Cast, and Theratog Fitting. Her center is also the first in Delhi NCR to offer both DMI therapy and Dynamic Flex Cast, placing it at the forefront of pediatric neurorehabilitation in India.

“We’ve created a space where science meets empathy,” says Dr. Pande. “Our therapy rooms are fully equipped with DMI cubes, balance aids, postural supports, and assistive technologies. But more importantly, we listen to every child’s body—and every parent’s heart.”

The center’s integrated model includes pediatric physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists—all with backgrounds in premier hospitals such as Artemis, Medanta, and CK Birla. This multidisciplinary team customizes therapy plans based on a detailed initial assessment and monitors progress through quantifiable goals.

Key features of Milestone’s therapy model:

  • NDT for tone regulation and foundational control
  • DMI for motor exploration, strength, and coordination
  • TASES (Task-Specific Electrical Stimulation) to activate specific muscle groups
  • Dynamic Flex Cast for posture correction and alignment
  • Parent training programs for home reinforcement
  • Speech and communication labs for children with concurrent speech delays

Crucially, the center emphasizes early intervention. “The first five years of life are critical for brain development. That’s when neuroplasticity is at its peak,” Dr. Pande explains. “Delaying therapy often means missing that golden window for transformation.”

Beyond therapy, Milestone is building a community. Parents receive continuous support through workshops, progress reviews, and home-based training modules. The clinic’s parent-first approach has created an ecosystem of trust and collaboration—essential elements for long-term success.

Looking ahead, Dr. Pande envisions Milestone as a model for pediatric neurorehabilitation across India. “Our mission is simple—to ensure that no child is left behind because of lack of access, awareness, or effective therapy.”

For parents noticing signs like delayed crawling, walking, or posture issues, or conditions such as toe-walking, poor head control, or scissoring of legs, early evaluation by a certified pediatric physiotherapist is essential. As awareness grows, clinics like Milestone Child Development Center are making it easier than ever for families to access world-class care right in their neighborhood.
